Race #7 at Waycross Speedway
07-23-05

Sorry I don't have much to report from Waycross.

We're still trying to figure out what the new car needs. Even after making several changes I was still real loose in practice and spun the car in to the wall. Mostly cosmetic damage but I hated to bang up my new car. After that, we had to spend most of the time we had fixing the car so we didn't really make much of a change to the chassis for the heat race. Turns out the gear was all wrong and I tried to start in 6th gear so I wouldn't have to shift so I dropped from the outside pole to the back pretty fast before I got the car up to speed. The track was getting tighter and the car was a little better too. I could catch the car in front of me going into the turn but I just didn't have the power coming off the turn to pass him. I finished the race in 6th. I never even thought about down shifting to get the motor up to speed. There sure is a lot to learn and a lot to remember when you start driving a race car. I'll get the hand of it though. I wish we could use radios.

Well, we changed rear springs and the gear and a few other things and then got ready for our feature. As we were lining up, a car than was racing in the class before us hit the wall in turn 2 and knocked down about 40 feet of concrete wall! You wouldn't believe it! I've heard people say that someone tried to knock down the wall. Heck, I've even done that before, but this guy actually did it. The track workers spent about 45 minutes dragging off huge blocks of concrete before they gave us the signal that we could start the race but there was a fairly large section of concrete that was jetting out at the exit of turn 2 and that looked pretty dangerous. We all talked and agreed that we would rather come back and run the race another day rather than take a chance on hitting that wall and destroying a car or maybe even injuring a driver. So we told the track promoter that we didn't want to race and he said he understood.

So when we go back in September we'll run a double feature which will be pretty cool. Especially if we have this chassis figured out by then!
